Anita Hipple Obituary

Anita Lorraine Layton Hipple, age 97, passed away peacefully 4/29/2022.  She was born May 14, 1924, the second child of Louis Henry Layton, Jr. and Maude Ryland Pritchett, at her grandparents Pritchett’s home in Spotsylvania County, VA.

She grew up in Washington, DC, attending Emery Elementary, Langley Junior High and McKinley Technical High School, graduating in June 1942.   In the summer of 1942 she attended Chamberlain Vocational School, and became a clerk typist in the Finance Office of the United States Army (FOUSA) during WWII.

She married George John Irvin Hipple June 21, 1943, while George was serving in the US Army during WWII.  They were married 64 years. Their union produced 4 children, three living to maturity.

While George worked his career at IBM in DC, Anita worked from 1958 to 1985 in the office of Beitzell & Co, also in DC.  They lived in Washington, DC and its suburbs, but a transfer with IBM moved the family to Sherman, TX, where they lived for three years.  Missing their beloved Chesapeake Bay, they returned to Maryland, living in Bladensburg before settling in Laurel in 1963.

George & Anita enjoyed friendships among their fellow workers and had various corporate social events and travel opportunities over the years. They enjoyed boating and crabbing with family and friends on the Chesapeake Bay, and around Ocean City, MD.

A trailer home was purchased in Rehoboth Beach, DE in a park where several of their lifelong friends also purchased homes.  This special group of friends began in Junior High School with the forming of the SDC (SubDebClub) and continued until her passing.  Two of her sorority sisters are still living.  A truly special group of ladies and their spouses.

Anita was a member of First Baptist Church, Laurel, MD for 59 years.  She was involved in teaching Sunday School Classes, Linus Ministry and her beloved ‘Joy Class’ of precious senior ladies.

Anita was predeceased by her husband George and sons Steven George and George John as well as brothers and sisters Dorothy Layton Ruffner (Jack). Louis Henry Layton, III (Leona), Jean Layton Fitzgerald (Don), Joel Davis Layton (Nadine/Lila), Alma Layton Gonzales, Janey Layton Knopf (Bill).

She is survived by daughters Gail Lorraine Hipple Bates (David), Cheryl Jeane Hipple, Rosemarie  Boeckmann Hipple (George), grandson’s Robert Lee Bates, Dwight David Bates (Stephanie), Jeremiah Patrick Hipple, Travis Michael Hipple and great grandchildren Jonathan Gibson Bates, Owen David Bates and Lydia Kathryn Bates as well as several nieces and nephews and their families
