Frederick Daniel Veihmeyer
Frederick D. Veihmeyer, age 98, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024. Fred was born to Edna (Zimmerman) and Jesse George Veihmeyer in the Benning neighborhood of Washington DC. As a boy, he moved with his family to the Kenilworth neighborhood where he lived until entering the service. As a young man, he was very active in sports. He was a star baseball player in numerous amateur and semi-pro leagues and exceled at the amateur level in football, bowling, boxing and golf. He entered the navy near the end of WW2 and was stationed in Connecticut, although he did not see combat duty.
He went to work as a draftsman for Lohnes and Culver, a broadcast consulting engineering firm, on his 20th birthday. In the years to follow he became a highly respected member of the broadcast engineering community and continued to work for L&C as a consulting engineer until retirement as a partner in the firm in 2012 at the age of 86.
He married Mavreen Margaret Kelly of Dallas, Pennsylvania, in 1962. The couple moved to Bethesda, then Riverdale, and finally, in 1966, to Laurel, where he would spend the rest of his life. As a well-liked member of the West Laurel community, he was active in the West Laurel Swim Club and as a soccer coach for the Laurel Boys and Girls Club. He raised two loving children, daughter Tracey, of Sykesville, and son Bill, of Ellicott City.
Among his lifelong passions were cooking, fishing, sports, and family. As a chef, he hosted numerous family and neighborhood get togethers featuring expertly prepared food and great comradery. His Christmas cookie platters were always eagerly received. As a fisherman, he explored and fished the waters of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries and enjoyed offshore fishing in the Atlantic as well as sport fishing in the Florida Everglades. As an athlete he enjoyed playing golf into his late eighties. He was an avid follower of the Master’s tournament and attended the event numerous times, even playing the tournament course on occasion. As a sports fan, he supported DC area teams including the Commanders (Redskins), Senators, Nationals, and Orioles. In addition, he was a fan of University of Maryland sports, and was a follower of men's and women's world cup soccer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mary and Jean and son Daniel and is survived by wife of 62 years, Mavreen (Deeny), daughter Tracey (Mark Katz), son Bill (Carole), grandchildren Charlie and Danielle, and his boyhood friend and lifelong pal, Mac Farr.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 29, at Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A., 313 Talbott Avenue, Laurel, MD 20707. The family will welcome visitors at 2:00 p.m., followed by a celebration of life at 3:00 p.m.
