Stanley Jerome Holcomb

Stanley Jerome Holcomb was born on November 19, 1950 in Washington, District of Columbia. He was the son of the late Susie Pearl (Battle) Holcomb and the late James Holcomb, Sr. Stanley passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on Friday, March 24, 2023. 

Along with his parents and siblings, Stanley grew up in the Woodridge area of Washington DC. He attended DC public schools and graduated in the Class of 1968 from McKinley Senior High School, where he was in JROTC. He also attended Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Stanley went on to serve in the United States Army as a Personnel Specialist (E-3), receiving many awards during his time of service. 

Stanley came to faith in Jesus Christ at an early age while attending the Nazareth Baptist Church in Washington, DC. He remained a faithful member of the Spirit of Elijah Kingdom Church in Ft. Washington, MD until the time of his death.

Stanley was married to Christine Downs and from this union was born a son, Stanley Holcomb Andrews. He was honored to be stepfather to Tina Holmes, and later Alicia Jones Nunez and Michelle Jones. On January 21, 2005 Stanley and Rebeca Ayala were joined in holy matrimony. Rebeca was the love of his life, and they enjoyed a beautiful life together, along with their beloved dog, Mya and cat, Simba. 

Under the tutelage of his father, Stanley became a licensed Master plumber in DC, MD, and VA and a plumbing inspector in DC. He eventually took over the family plumbing business, Holcomb Family Plumbing and Heating in DC, and was responsible for many others learning the trade. In keeping with the family legacy of educators, Stanley eventually pursued a second career as a vocational plumbing instructor at Thomas Edison Technology High School in Montgomery County, MD from 2006 - 2019, where he had the opportunity to impact many more lives.

Stanley had many other talents, including singing. He was a faithful member of the worship team and praise band at Spirit of Elijah Kingdom Church for many years. He was known for his smooth vocals and harmonies, animated percussion performances, and joyful praise and worship. But as a young adult, he and his older brother James had a singing group called the “Starlites.” They were known for singing songs by the Temptations and other performers of soul music, complete with intricate choreography. 

Stanley was also an athletic fitness buff for most of his life. He earned a 3rd degree black belt in

Karate, and he won several karate championships at Madison Square Gardens in New York City. He also trained personally with Billy Blanks and became a certified Tae Bo instructor. He opened his own fitness center and went on to teach kickboxing classes well into his 60’s. 

Stanley’s love of teaching and mentorship was multi-faceted. He served as a mentor to countless young men. Whether they were plumbing apprentices, students, church youth, or family members, Stanley was generous in sharing knowledge, support and encouragement. He planted seeds that have born lasting fruit for decades. He was also a Boy Scout leader, nature lover, and enjoyed camping. He often organized camping trips for young boys, sharing his love of fishing and canoeing. 

Stanley’s social consciousness was displayed in his early years as a Black Panther. Some may recall him adopting the name, Masai. To say that “Stan the Man” will be missed is an understatement. His zest for life, warm smile, and heart for service left an imprint on the lives and hearts of all who knew him. 

Stanley was preceded in death by his mother, Susie Pearl Battle Holcomb; father, James Will Holcomb, Sr.; and sister, Naomi Holcomb Hudson. He leaves to cherish his memory, his cherished wife,  Rebeca Sarai Holcomb of Laurel, MD; his son, Stanley Holcomb Andrews (Andenisia) of Capital Heights, MD; his brother, Apostle James Holcomb, Jr. (Pastor Gwenith) of Ft Washington, MD; his sister, Lynne Lennon (Moses) of Duquesne, PA; his sister Valerie Dawkins (Pastor Derrick) of Washington, DC; his brother, Ricardo Manago (Jasmine) of VA; one grandchild, Abigail Ramirez;  mother and father-in-law Fransisco and Maria Ayala of El Salvador, eight Ayala family in-laws (Jose, Dina, Susana, Raquel, David, Pablo, Douglas, and Auner); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
